(5/5) Ellen from the Netherlands - Bach flowers personal mix for cats
Ellen (Maverick)

Goodmorning Tom,

Finally a quiet moment to bring you up to date about how things are going with my cat Maverick.

Even though the drops were delivered quickly, it seemed to me like it was almost too late. He didn't eat anything for a few days and wasn't interested in me or any of my other pets. He would withdraw and hide himself under covers, in corners, everywhere he could as long as it was small and dark. He was very afraid, was startled by even the smallest thing and it was very sad. He didn't let me approach him at all.

The first three days, he didn't even drink anything. There was no way to give him his Bach flowers. To force the drops on him wasn't an option because he's a wild cat. Wild as in he isn't socialised.

Then I decided - I've read it somewhere - to give him the drops on his neck while I caressed him (when I was able to get close to him). As many times as possible, even though it was only like 4 times a day. Just like with flea drops.

After three days he started to drink, so then I put the drops in his drinking water, as well as the drops on his neck, because he only drank a bit in the morning. After a week of giving him the drops, he suddenly came into the living room in the morning. He hadn't eaten for eight days by then and you could see he was deteriorating. But he was sitting on his feeding spot and licked off a teaspoon I had put in a bit of sauce from a can of food. On that day he thought this was enough, but for me it was a sign he was starting to react to the drops.

The next day he ate a teaspoon of canned food, the following day it was a tablespoon. So after not eating for ten days, he slowly started to come back. After a week of eating small bits, he had a relapse, but this only lasted three days, and he continued to eat small portions. His depression is very similar to us humans: two steps forward, and one back. So recognizable...

Meanwhile everything is going a bit better with him. I still see that everyday he picks up an old habit that he didn't do for months. Simple things like drinking from the faucet, seeking out old sleeping places, starting to meow again, licking my other cat. He goes and sits in the sun and even came to sit on my lap one time. Everyday I see some progress. Maybe he should learn to stand up for himself a bit more, but that may come one day. He has had to come from far, but at least he did it.

I am very happy with the Bach flowers. This has cost me 5 years of my life (smile). It was very frustrating and took a lot of me. I know he probably also reacted to my problems from the last couple of months. And my new cat was probably also the last straw he couldn't handle. And I know I have to stay positive for him because he mirrors himself to me. But it is easier said than done not to worry about your "child". I saw him slipping away into the abyss while he wouldn't let me help him and there was nothing I could do for him. I know from my own experience what it's like to be depressed, so I could imagine very well what he must have been feeling. And that only made the frustration greater.

Luckily things are coming along. We're not there yet but I know we have to be patient. I will continue to give him his drops in his food for the next few months. Depression doesn't go away easily. And I can handle it better myself.

Thanks for your help Tom. I'm very happy you could help me that quickly. I will certainly let you know how it's going with him.
Have a very nice day, here the weather is very lovely, so we will enjoy the warmth and the sun!

Regards,
Ellen
