Dr. Edward Bach was born in Worcestershire, England in the year 1886. He became a surgeon in 1912 and worked at University College Hospital in London. His private medical practice was held at the world-famous Harley Street. But Bach came to disagree with the views held by practitioners of modern medicine. He felt deeply dissatisfied with the way doctors were expected to treat their patients. Instead, Dr. Bach favored a more holistic approach to healing, where different factors affecting someone’s well-being are considered in relation to each other. Physicians had a tendency to service individual body parts as though fixing an engine. The focus was on treating a disease rather than curing a whole human being.
While Dr. Bach was working on research for his vaccines, he began another branch of his career simultaneously at the London Homeopathic Hospital. He quickly grasped the underlying principles of homeopathy and became fascinated with this area. Bach was concerned that vaccines he was working on were the byproducts of diseases. This played fact played on his conscience. He wanted to discover a new, natural, gentler form of healing. In 1930, he left his Harley Street practice to pursue his interest in flower remedies. Dr. Bach had decided to leave modern medicine behind and to devote his life to finding cures in nature instead.
Flowers are the most developed parts of plants, so Bach reasoned that these contained the most healing power. He abandoned the scientific methods he had employed in his laboratory while developing the vaccines. Instead, he relied on his intuitive healing capacities. Intuition helped him to find natural ways to treat a variety of emotional and psychological problems affecting human health. This method took many years and a great deal of patience to master. Test results were often a product of trial and error. Eventually the years of dedication and hard work paid off, and Dr. Bach’s system of healing was complete.
Dr. Bach felt that the most effective way to heal others is by treating their feelings and mental state. He theorized that when the Bach Flower Essences were effective, they acted to unblock areas of the body which needed to be healed. Between the years 1930-1934 the Dr. spent the warmer summer months testing plant species. In the winter he would impart homeopathic advice to those who asked for it. When Dr. Edward Bach died on November 27th 1936, he was only 50 years old. His legacy to the world still lives on. Today, the 38 Bach Flower Essences are used across the planet as part of the natural healing system he created. Individual essences are combined to tackle a range of emotional and psychological issues experienced by people around the world.
